Runebound Second Edition - Market Variant

last updated February 8th, 2024 — created October 22nd, 2015

We feel that visiting the market in Runebound 2nd, unchanged, is a bit of a waste of time. You rarely find anything useful for your specific needs and more often than not have to spend too many turns searching the market stack in a town. This is our approach to a wildly improved market mechanic. Instead of a single market stack, you have 6. Each stack has specific types of items and when you visit the market you have a level of control of what types of items you will find. We have also gone through the market deck, with all of the expansions, and removed any cards that we didn't feel were valuable enough to stay. Thus helping to ensure that visits to the market are beneficial.

This PDF is 300 DPI (suitable for printing)

Provided in the variant's PDF are 2 pages you can cut out to make a simple board for your market. However, if you'd like something a bit more substantial, you can have an actual board printed with the market board image, as seen here. Note: do not actually play with your market stacks faceup, this is just to show the different stack types.

These rule variants are designed to streamline gameplay and make it much, much faster. Faster level ups, item acquisition, and nerfed knock outs.
Foam-Core Insert
This design covers every expansion, limits the boxes needed to play, and features boxes for Adventure Variants and Character Decks.
Icon Reference
We made an expansions icon reference sheet so we could easily see which content belongs to what expansion.

Other Variant Projects
World of WarCraft: The Board Game
We have found that it is better to play this game fully cooperatively instead of as 2 factions. It's faster, more exciting, and has less downtime.
Runebound Second Edition
These rule variants are designed to streamline gameplay and make it much, much faster. Faster level ups, item acquisition, and nerfed knock outs.
World of WarCraft: The Adventure Game
For balance reasons we removed a space near Undercity and are restricting the use of Grumbaz Crowsblood to solo play.
StarCraft: The Board Game
This variant is designed to force players to wage war and limit "camp and build" strategies.
D&D Adventure Board Games
We wanted to construct our own campaign-style game involving all of our D&D games. The result is this adventure book for the first four games.
Mage Knight Board Game
Much like our variants for Runebound 2nd Edition, these variants are designed to speed up gameplay, allow players to level faster, and nerf taking wounds.
Chaostle
This variant serves to bring a bit more balance to gameplay and speed it up a great deal. At least 1d10 (one 10 sided die) is required to use these variants.
Harry Potter: Mystery at Hogwarts
These variants are designed to clarify rules, plug rule holes, etc.
